Experimental learning and active engagement is key in the development of global competencies. Students might achieve these experiences through international exchange programs or community service projects that allow students to live, study, and in some cases work in another country; through summer camps (local or abroad) that expose students to international languages and cultures; or through other arrangements with foreign educational institutions. A key advantage of living in a city as diverse as Seattle is the availability of numerous opportunities within our own communities for students to gain practical experience in international languages and cultures. Students will identify opportunities (either locally or internationally) with an adviser that fulfill this requirement. Students should document and reflect on their learning and skills development through experiential learning, indicating what competencies they developed as a result of their International Engagement experience(s).
This is a space for students to reflect on their international experiences. These reflections might be from traveling abroad- to study a language, do service work, or engage in international exchange. A student might also reflect on a 'glocal' experience- that is an international engagement experience here in Washington. The World Affairs Council can share a list of relevant 'glocal' opportunities with students, and students can also explore the Events page on our website to find upcoming programs through The World Affairs Council. Students may also choose their own unique 'glocal' opportunity in consultation with an adviser.
